Hi Sofia! When you’re just starting out, I recommend you focus on your own blog first. One of the most important things you can do is write lots of content. When combined with good SEO strategy, it’s the fastest way to grow a new blog. There are lots of things you *could* do when just starting out, but in my experience the 4 things to really double down on are SEO, writing blog posts based on good keyword research, email marketing and monetization (in the early days I recommend you focus on affiliate marketing and launching your own digital product). Guest posting can be in the mix too – it can help you get backlinks and boost your visibility, but it should not get in the way of those 4 key pillars. Hope that helps! Eb πŸ™‚

I do have one post drafted and a short list of sites to pitch... But right now I still feel that writing for my own blog is the most important. I have been trying to schedule ahead but it always feels there's so much to do... That I'm kind of "saving" that post in case I need it for my own blog πŸ˜… maybe I should just finish it and submit it to another blogger instead πŸ™ˆ]]> Thank you Eb, excellent as always!! So happy to be part of your circle now 😊

Great to hear! That’s a hard question to answer as there’s no real set minimum, and attitudes to guest posting depend on niche too. But given you are still quite new/small, personally I’d recommend you do a bit more work on your own blog first before you start pitching. That said, if you want to have a go at pitching now, there’s no harm in it… it’s just that you might not get many/any positive results. When you do start pitching, I recommend you start with smaller blogs and work up to bigger blogs over time. If you start by pitching to other small blogs, you are much more likely to get positive responses. Good luck!

This was really helpful. I was wondering if you would have any feedback in particular for small bloggers? I have 20 posts up so far, so how many posts would you recommend I publish until I start looking into guest posting? Thank you!

Thanks Caroline! I wouldn’t recommend that. Otherwise that’s duplicate content and you are competing against yourself in search results, and also most guest post hosts don’t accept that, anyway. Some bloggers include a short excerpt from the guest post on their site and then include a link to the host’s site for the full article… that’s one option… I would say this is a slightly old fashioned approach, and doesn’t really reflect how people tend to read blogs these days… (back in the day, when people would read every new blog post a blogger put out, this made sense… but now, when people are most likely to come from Google, it makes much less sense.) What I would do, though, is make sure you tell your email list and social media followers about your guest post. Another alternative is to use all the research you did for the guest post to write a similar, but not identical post on your site… perhaps one which goes into much more depth, or one which takes a slightly different angle. How that helps! Eb πŸ™‚

I’m just wondering if you write a guest blog can you also publish on your own site with a different title?

I think many bloggers think they will have instant success by guest blogging but it does not work that way. It’s a long-term commitment and takes time to achieve success through steady guest posting. I think it’s important where you guest post to as well as you have mentioned.
Thanks for the tips too!
